MGIMO is one of the most prestigious universities in Russia. Most graduates of lyceums, gymnasiums and schools from different Russian cities dream of enrolling in applicants, and their parents often wonder whether it is realistic to enter MGIMO, since the passing scores for budget places are really very high.

Admission to undergraduate programs

In order to apply for undergraduate programs at MGIMO, applicants need to collect a package of documents, including USE certificates, and also successfully pass an additional entrance test conducted directly by the university itself.

Is it possible to enter MGIMO without taking the exam? Yes, it is possible for applicants who graduated from school several years ago. To do this, they need to pass exams at the university itself, which are analogous to the exam.

Minimum USE scores

In order to be able to submit documents to MGIMO, applicants need to score the following USE points:

DWI: creative competition and exam in a foreign language

What do you need to enter MGIMO, besides high results in the exam? In order to participate in the competition, applicants must pass entrance testsconducted directly by the university itself.

For some of the undergraduate programs, including the direction of "International Journalism", applicants need to pass a creative competition, which includes 2 stages. The first stage is writing an essay on one of the proposed socio-political topics. The second stage is an interview conducted by an examination committee. The applicant is asked questions, all answers are recorded and further evaluated.

In order to be able to participate in the competition in the future, an applicant must score more than 60 points out of 100 for an additional entrance test. Applicants who scored less than 60 points are not allowed to further participate in the competition.

Budget and paid places

How to enter MGIMO on a budget? In order to enroll in budgetary places, the applicant needs to score high enough points on the exam and on an additional entrance test.

In each direction, the number of budget places is limited, exactly the same as the number of places with paid education. In 2018, 79 and 33 budget places were allocated for the program, as well as 20 and 30 places with tuition fees, respectively. There are 67 budget places at the Faculty of International Economic Relations, while the competition for one place is more than 9 people.

It is quite difficult to enroll in MGIMO on a budgetary basis, both at the Faculty of International Journalism and at the Faculty of Management, since only 48 budget places have been allocated for the first faculty, and even less at the Faculty of Management - only 40. The competition for these faculties exceeds 50 people into place.

It is really difficult to enter MGIMO, both on a budgetary and on a paid basis of study, because the competition of more than 400 people is observed at the faculty of MIEP, where only 33 budget places are allocated in several directions. The Faculty of International Affairs has 60 budget-funded places, and 85 tuition-paying places are available. In 2018, a total of 424 budgetary places and 1,431 tuition-paying places were allocated to all undergraduate programs, including programs conducted at the MGIMO branch in Odintsovo.

Pre-university training

It is really difficult to enter MGIMO on a budget, both at the bachelor's and master's levels. The approach plays a huge role in preparation. That is why the university has created several systems for preparing applicants for admission to its faculties.

Pre-university training programs offered by MGIMO:

 • One-year full-time program.
 • A two-year program delivered as part of evening preparatory courses.
 • An accelerated one-year training program delivered as part of evening preparatory courses.
 • Courses in rare and oriental languages, conducted as part of a two-year pre-university training program.
 • Foreign language courses as part of modular training for admission to MGIMO.

It is worth noting that only applicants with a secondary education diploma are admitted to pre-university training programs conducted within the framework of the full-time form of education. Persons who have a higher education diploma educational institution, courses are not allowed. The duration of the training is 12 months. It is carried out during the day shift approximately 5 days a week. The load on subjects during the week is distributed as follows:

 • 14 hours of foreign language lessons;
 • 10 hours of classes in a specialized subject, which may include history, social studies, and mathematics;
 • 10 hours of Russian language lessons.

Admission to MGIMO, both at the faculty of pre-university training and at the bachelor's degree, is carried out according to the results of the exam and an additional entrance test. The courses are aimed at helping the applicant to more successfully pass the additional entrance examination conducted by the university.

Pre-master training

It is possible to enter MGIMO both for undergraduate and graduate programs by preparing for special courses held by the university. Pre-master's training includes several programs, such as:

 • jurisprudence;
 • economy;
 • international relationships;
 • management;
 • linguistics.

Also, sets are additionally opened for such directions as:

 • foreign Regional Studies;
 • finance and credit;
 • sociology;
 • journalism and others.

All pre-master training courses are paid. In total, the preparation courses last 28 weeks. The entire period of study is divided into 2 semesters of 14 weeks each. The format of the classes is structured so that applicants can fully familiarize themselves with the structure of additional entrance examinations.

Information about applicants

Lists of applicants to MGIMO are posted in a special section on the official website of the university. Also, all the final lists of applicants can be found in the admissions office of the educational institution.

The information on applicants posted on the official website is conveniently structured by faculty and areas of study. In other words, the applicant needs to go to the official website of the university, find the section dedicated to applicants, then select the faculty to which the application was submitted and check his data in a separate document. In addition, all applicants are structured not only by areas of training, but also by the basis of training: budgetary or paid.

Additional necessary information about admission

All the necessary information on how to enter MGIMO is posted in a special section for applicants on the official website of the university.

Applicants can familiarize themselves with the full list of directions for preparing bachelor's, master's and postgraduate programs, find out the schedule of the DVI, and also solve trial options for exams, which are also presented in the section for applicants.

The site also contains information about already submitted applications, as well as information about the competition for a place for the current position. Information is updated every business day.

The university strives to keep up with the times, therefore, you can also apply for admission to one of the educational programs through the online form on the official website.

Over the course of 6 years, answering the question of where I study, I have come across two types of reactions that can be summarized as follows

1. "Wow, cool"

2. "Everything is clear ...."

And then followed by similar questions, which accumulated and formed in my head into a kind of FAQ.

I remember very well how I looked for any information about universities, when I did it myself, how my parents interviewed my acquaintances, how I went about open days ... Perhaps this post will help someone make a decision for / against. Moreover, now the hot season begins.

Immediately disclaimer: the post is as objective as it can be with its subjectivity. Contains solely my personal point of view and is not an official position agreed with anyone.

A couple of introductory notes: I completed my bachelor's degree at the International Law Faculty (2015) and a master's degree in the program "Corporate Law and Legal Support of International Projects" (2017).

So....

Question 1: is it realistic to act without connections (cronyism / money / threats of violence, etc.)?

Myth: no.

Reality: yes.

I entered MGIMO by accident. Just in case, I went to the introductory language, as often happens, for the company.

The entire 11th grade was preparing for admission to Moscow State University, immediately took the originals there, and entered. And then they called me from MGIMO - "Congratulations, you entered the budget, bring your documents." And this call turned my life upside down.

None of my family / family friends are involved with diplomacy. Nobody studied at MGIMO. Nobody spent a dime on my admission, except for tutors to prepare for the exam.

And it’s not me that wonderful: I can guarantee that among my classmates, most of them acted in banal ways: through the Olympiads and the Unified State Exam. Yes, like this: studied, passed, entered.

Where did this myth come from then?

Historically, MGIMO was a closed university. This is a well-known fact.

It's hard to get rid of stereotypes. But we have to. Those days are over. Talented, smart, purposeful children from all over the country study at MGIMO.

Although, of course, if it didn’t work out, this myth is very convenient to use: it’s not me who didn’t make it, it’s all thieves at MGIMO. Convenient and not so offensive. Well, I'm sorry if offended.

Developing the topic of admission - about complexity. It depends on what the goals are. It's not easy on a budget, on a paid one, in my opinion, it's easy. Here you just need to open the site and find information on admission: there are passing points.

Important! When I entered, MGIMO had a DVI in language. I don't know how it is now. It was really difficult, first of all, due to its specifics. Even knowing the language well, passing it is not easy. I will give my example - for the Unified State Exam in German I had 97 points, for DWI - 79🙈 .

Question 2: what is it like to study at MGIMO for an ordinary person, everything is there with guards / drivers / gold watches / diamonds (a long list of signs of luxury, who cares for what)?

Myth: the golden youth rules the ball.

Reality: there are many children from rich / famous / influential families, it's true. But their attention is a minority.

More than half of my former classmates are guys from ordinary families, most of whom come from the provinces.

Nothing, everyone lives fine, the mini-society is divided in exactly the same way as it happens in life: according to interests, goals, and, of course, the level of income, without this there is nowhere.

When I was choosing between universities, one of my biggest fears was that I would not be able to communicate with anyone except the owners of Birkin and Rolex of different colors for every day of the week. From the first day the fear of the ball was dispelled.

Question 3: Is it hard to learn?

Myth: opinions differ - someone thinks that they don't study here, someone thinks that it is very difficult to study.

Reality: difficult, but possible.

Guys, I just want to warn you: if you don't speak foreign languages, don't even think about MGIMO... Just grab it right away and cross it off the list. There is a lot of language, it is difficult and necessary. Moreover, at least two are required. Life will become unbearable for those who are not friends with them. Why do you need this? Don't waste your health and nerves.

Otherwise, everything is real. An interesting feature: it is obvious that after graduation from school, graduates are divided by level. Sounds bad, but it is. There are top universities (everyone knows which ones), there are good ones, there are ... I will not continue. There are different ones.

As a result of this division, upon entering the university, the former stars of the school - excellent medalists - and simply the pride of the class - are faced with the fact that they are ... no longer the best. Because as a result of natural selection, they end up in a society where "unreal" 90+ points for the USE ... almost everyone (I note that in MGIMO which year has the highest passing score in Russia).

I faced this myself. It is psychologically difficult, it hurts a little on self-esteem, but it perfectly stimulates. Now it is not enough to wear your last name, no one knows how smart you are, and there are a lot of smarter ones around. What remains? It remains to plow. Excellent school of life.

This is about excellent students and co. But, of course, not everyone is like that at MGIMO. The rest also live normally: they have to study, but no one is particularly killed, completely lazy (and incapable of languages, I emphasize again) are expelled.

Question 4: Are there many temptations?

Myth: drug dealers walk around the university, and syringes are regularly found in the toilets (a favorite myth of parents of applicants). Provincial girls are turning into Moscow groom hunters. Good guys from outside Moscow are doomed to fail.

Reality: if your child wants to find drugs, he will find them. Never in my life have I come across such a thing within the walls of the university, although it was almost the most common horror story about MGIMO. Perhaps it was a PR move for a certain target audience🤔, which was probably very disappointed.

They are looking for grooms (and brides), yes. Someone does this for this purpose. Someone reaches it. But it's great when dreams come true. Who seeks will always find. No negative influence was noticed on normal people.

Question 5: what about extracurricular activities?

Myth: Every weekend there are university sailing regattas and golf games.

Reality: there are a lot of opportunities, but within reason.

Within the walls of the university, a huge number of events are held every day, ranging from meetings with diplomats of various ranks and stars of show and not only business, and ending with sports matches. We have a Volunteer Center (hello, I missed, to my greatest regret, the 2014 Olympics), a super-active SS (who would have thought it was? Student Union), various festivals and competitions are held (International Cuisine Day is everyone's favorite, Miss MGIMO, MGIMO Music Awards, etc.), conferences (Model UN) and much more. I'm just too lazy to list, let it be a pleasant surprise.

Separately, I would like to say about the internship programs (because this is one of the brightest memories during my studies). Students with good academic performance can go for a semester (and not only, it depends) to study abroad at one of the partner universities (the list is on the website). This is an amazing experience, I advise everyone. I studied for six months in Germany. Honestly - I will never forget.

Question 6: how about employment?

Myth: there are two ways from here - the Foreign Ministry or the special services.

Reality: objectively, it is not easy in a crisis. The diploma helps at the screening stage, but not further.

Yes, the school is strong. Yes, languages are at the highest level in the country. But the stories that employers arrange fights for you in your third year and dream of offering a salary of 200-300 thousand are fairy tales. There is no such thing, sorry.

They are going where. Yes - the Foreign Ministry has more than 90%, I think - ours (MO). I don’t think this is surprising.

So, hope for a crust, but don't make a mistake yourself.

Question 7: did you regret going?

Here the answer is simple - no. I acquired a People, a School and what they like to call Alma mater. Everything could have been different, if I hadn't been led by a rush 6 years ago. Worse or better, I'll never know.

But what I know for sure is that you shouldn't be afraid. MGIMO is real, possible and wonderful. Go for it!

P.S. I would really like the post to come out alive, so I’m not putting an end to it: dear family, I would like to involve the “top officials” for greater objectivity: maybe remember your “favorite” questions / add thoughts or comments. What if it really helps someone.

P.P.S. We have very tasty food in the dining room. Perhaps it was worth starting with this.

The Moscow State Institute of International Relations is in second place among Russian universities in terms of the number of references in the English-language foreign media, second only to the Moscow State University. Lomonosov. In an interview about the university, about himself, about how to enter MGIMO, one of his students from Cheboksary, Denis Shchiptsov, tells.

- Denis, what school did you go to?

- I studied at the Cheboksary gymnasium No. 4 with in-depth study of the English language. We have been teaching English from the second grade. There are quite a few hours of English. Starting from grade 9, we begin a series of subjects that are conducted purely on english language: "The basis of the theory and practice of translation", "US literature", "American literature", "American regional studies", "US regional studies" and, in fact, "English".

- Why did you go to MGIMO, and not to some other university?

- In its direction, our institute is one of the best in Russia. By some indicators, it is definitely the best. In addition, the level of education is very high and the diploma is recognized abroad.

- What did you do at MGIMO?

- I have long wanted to go there. From 8 grade. I periodically visited their website on the Internet www.mgimo.ru: I read the opinions of applicants, the normative documents that are adopted there. Everything is there to help the applicant. In the 11th grade, he began to study additionally both himself and with the teachers.

- Denis, was it difficult to enter?

- The admission process itself was simple. I just prepared painstakingly.

- What exams did you have to take?

- There you have to pass three exams. Russian and foreign languages are required. And depending on the faculty, a profile exam is passed. For example, at the International Law Faculty you need to take "Social Studies", at the Faculty of International Relations - "History". I entered the Faculty of International Economic Relations and gave the USE certificate in mathematics.

- Does MGIMO accept the exam?

- Yes, it does. I submitted results in Russian and mathematics. USE level in English, the selection committee is not satisfied. And therefore "English" passed on a general basis.

- How many points did you get on the exam?

- 99 points in Russian, 90 points in mathematics.

- Where do you live in Moscow?

- I live in a hostel. The life of our students is very well organized. In a room for 2 people. There is a kitchenette, toilet, shower.

- How did the current session go?

- Dealt with three "fives" and one "four".

- Does everyone pass the session? Is the dropout big?

- As a rule, people enter our institute not to play the fool. If you have come, then you have come to study. People came with great motivation and made a huge effort to become a student at MGIMO.

- Please tell us about your future profession?

- An economist can find a wide range of applications for his knowledge, ranging from a stockbroker to an ordinary accountant. All levels: start your own business, work as a full-time economist at any enterprise, work as a manager in a company, or just sit and count, whatever.

- In what area will you work after graduation?

- I have not decided yet. Our institute has signed the "Bologna Agreement" and we are given two diplomas: Russian and international. I think there will be no problems with finding a job. The diploma must contain an "international economist" with knowledge of two foreign languages.

- What language are you studying additionally?

- I study English and Spanish. Spanish goes very well. For a year and a half I have already learned to communicate.

- Where do your classmates study?

- In a very wide range of universities. If we take only Moscow, then this is the Higher School of Economics, the Institute of Oil and Gas, the Institute of Radio Electronics and Automation, the Russian Agricultural Academy, state University management and so on.

- Did you manage to meet your friends during the holidays?

- Unfortunately, alumni meetings this year were canceled due to quarantine. But I managed to meet both friends and teachers from the school. Nice to meet with the teachers, because they have done so much for us, for example our classroom teacher Fedotova Tamara Anatolyevna and teacher of Russian language and literature Goncharova Lyubov Nikolaevna. They didn't just teach us, they put everything they knew into us and helped us develop as individuals.

- How many people study from Chuvashia at MGIMO?

- At this time, only 10 people from our school are studying at MGIMO. Three of us enrolled from their parallel, and last year 4 more people. Gymnasium No. 4 gives a very good base in English. And besides this, other subjects are also given at a high level. When I was at school, professors from ChGU and ChSPU were additionally invited, who taught us special subjects and special courses. Our school is considered one of the best not only in Cheboksary, but also in the Republic.

- What did you have to sacrifice for admission?

- First of all, free time. The entire 11th grade was spent on preparing for the entrance exams. There was little time for meetings with classmates and personal life. There were also financial investments: tutors, textbooks, I had to go to an open house in the institute in the spring. My parents also had a hard time, but they always supported me and support me, for which I am very grateful to them.

- What would you like to wish the current 11-graders?

- Let them not think that it is impossible to enter MGIMO. You just need to go to your goal and not sit idly by. It is possible to enter there. An ordinary university.

- Do you want to say that MGIMO is not an elite university ?!

- Of course, elite. But the admission rules are the same as in other universities. If earlier MGIMO could only enter on the recommendation of the party, now the guarantee of admission is only real good knowledge.
