The factory in Lipetsk was apparently closed more than a year ago, but the candies are still being sold.

Today I saw Roshen's sweets in a store in Crimea.

The Roshen corporation, owned by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, claims that since April 2017 they have not produced candies with Russian labels. However, Roshen sweets are still sold in Russia.

Today I went into a store next door to my home in the city of Stary Krym and immediately found caramel made by Roshen on the shelf. Just in case, I took my cell phone out of my pocket and took a couple of pictures.

The price tag clearly shows that this is some kind of stale product, but a completely fresh delivery. Packed just a week ago - 09/27/2018

A message published on the Roshen Corporation website states that " Any products of the Roshen confectionery corporation that may be on sale in Crimea are not suitable for consumption. The shelf life of such products expired at least at the beginning of 2018, so they may be hazardous to health".

So, does the store sell expired and hazardous products?

Or is Roshen Corporation lying?

I took a closer look at the labels - they really are not Russian. According to the label, the caramel is not called “Crawfish”, but “Crabs” - that is, crabs. Although the picture shows a real cancer. Well, all the inscriptions are in English.

So there are only two options here. Either the Lipetsk factory really does not produce sweets with Russian labels, but produces them with English ones. Or these candies go to Crimea from Ukrainian factories, despite the food blockade of the peninsula declared by Ukraine.

In any case, the story with Roshen and her sweets is murky. Like many stories that take place on the other side of the Perekop Isthmus.

Who doesn't love delicious candy? How, for example, can you go on a visit without taking a gift with you, the main requirements for which are presentable packaging and good contents. That is why Ferrero Rocher sweets rarely linger on the shelves of our stores. The manufacturer, contrary to the opinion of many people, is not Roshen at all, but the famous Italian company Ferrero. So if you like traditional European chocolate, you can be sure that these golden-wrapped treats will suit your taste.

history of the company

This largest company was created in 1940 in Alba. Its founder was who gave the name to his brainchild. Ferrero Rocher candies were also named by analogy. The manufacturer, however, did not become famous for its exquisite sweets. The first product to roll off the assembly line was chocolate spread. In 1946, the consumer accepted it with delight. Essentially it's quality with toasted nuts. Already in 1954, the brand was renamed and given the name Nutella, which is still familiar to us.

Prosperity and worldwide fame

However, the company did not stop at producing chocolate spread. In 1968, it pleased consumers with a new product: the most delicate chocolate filled with milk cream. It began to be positioned as Kinder Chocolate. The high milk content suggested that this product was beneficial for children. After just 6 more years, the company released a new global brand, which is still loved by all children today. It's a chocolate egg with a toy inside. Almost simultaneously, Ferrero Rocher sweets entered the market. The manufacturer put his whole soul into their creation, and as a result, the world received an exquisite dessert. By the way, Raffaello sweets appeared almost simultaneously. In fact, their production technology is similar; in both cases, the shell is a crispy wafer, and inside there is a delicate cream and nut. These luxurious sweets brought the company millions of dollars and fame.

Popular among sweet tooths

Of course, there are a huge number of candies on the market today, which means you always have a choice. Why do customers choose Ferrero Rocher candies for many years in a row? The manufacturer was able to make the perfect dessert - tasty, light, and incredibly attractive. It simultaneously serves as a present and table decoration, as well as an exquisite treat. The taste of sweets can compete with many other desserts. That is why the brand does not lose its popularity year after year; on the contrary, against the backdrop of new products it stands out as something ideal and perfect - an unsurpassed classic. However, today there are many questions about whose Ferrero Rocher candy it is. The manufacturer (as we have already indicated) is an Italian company. This question arises in connection with the opening of a Ukrainian manufacturer of sweets with the consonant name “Roshen”.

What awaits you under the packaging?

Have all readers already tried these sweets? If not, then it’s time to discover this pleasure for yourself. Ferrero Rocher candy (produced in Italy) is a magnificent crispy dessert, which is a ball of milk chocolate and waffles, covered with nuts. Under the crispy shell there is a delicate cream and whole hazelnuts. A perfect combination that you can't help but love.

Cost of candy

In fact, it is quite high, but the pleasure is worth it. These candies are very popular in Russia. They rightfully belong to premium class sweets, and therefore are perfect for giving as a gift. The packaging is very laconic; today you can find packaging in the shape of a bell, herringbone, parallelepiped, cone, and square. A 100 g package will cost you 280 rubles, a g - 852 rubles.

Compound

Since we buy not packaging, but sweets, you are probably also interested in the composition. The candy manufacturer Ferrero Rocher (there is also a production complex in Russia) pleases us with fairly acceptable ingredients. It’s difficult to call them healthy, but the candies don’t contain anything dangerous either. These are nuts and cocoa butter, milk powder, sugar, cocoa powder and whey. In addition, the composition contains wheat flour and vegetable oil, as well as vanillin. Calorie content - 580 kcal per 100 g of product.

Factory in the Vladimir region

Of course, sweets are not brought to us from Italy; it was much easier for the manufacturing company to create a factory in Russia. This decision was made in 2007, and after much debate, the Vladimir region was chosen. Already in 2009, the first production line was launched. Today it is a modern production complex, the area of which exceeds 80,000 m2. At the same time, a foreign company not only provides people with jobs, but also makes its contribution to improving the economic indicators of the region.

Products of the Roshen company

With the beginning of the conflicts in Ukraine, this topic is becoming more and more pressing, so let’s set the record straight. The consonant names confused people and now many of them believe that the manufacturer of Ferrero Rocher candies is Poroshenko. In fact, nothing like that, we already told you that these are Italian sweets. Their manufacturer values traditions and has kept the quality bar at the highest level for many years in a row. But “Roshen” is a cheaper candy, often with dubious ingredients. However, it's not just about the consonant name. The fact is that the Ukrainian manufacturer decided to go even further and grab part of the market, already kindly won by the Italians. What do I need to do? That's right, release products that are as similar as possible to a well-known brand, preferably expensive. Apparently for these reasons they plagiarized Ferrero Rocher candies. Manufacturer Poroshenko (it was not possible to find a photo of the product, and representatives of the Ukrainian company deny the fact that this product is distributed through the distribution network) changed the name quite a bit and the result was Rocher sweets. Italian manufacturers sued their Ukrainian colleagues. They, in turn, argued that this is a completely independent brand, which is completely different from its Italian counterpart. As a result, the Ukrainian company Roshen lost the lawsuit regarding the Rocher brand, which means that the buyer will no longer be misled.

Let's sum it up

We all love sweets very much. We buy them when we go on a visit, take them home for tea, as a gift and at work. Even ordinary caramels make ours, let alone the exquisite and stunning Ferrero Rocher. Their only drawback is their high price, although this may not be a bad thing. The only way to get rid of them is when the box runs out. And if they were more accessible, the chance of quickly gaining excess weight would increase significantly.

Brand: Roshen

Tagline: Sweet quality mark

Industry: food industry

Products: chocolate, cookies, candies, waffles, etc.

Brand launch year: 2000

Owner: Confectionery Corporation Roshen

Confectionery Corporation Roshen- one of the largest Ukrainian producers of confectionery products. The main office of the company is located in Kyiv.

The company was founded in 1996. The corporation includes 6 confectionery factories located both on the territory of Ukraine (Kiev Confectionery Factory named after K. Marx CJSC, Vinnitsa Confectionery Factory OJSC, Mariupol Confectionery Factory CJSC, Kremenchug Confectionery Factory CJSC) and beyond its borders – JSC Lipetsk Confectionery Factory Likonf (Russia) and JSC Klaipeda Confectionery Factory (Lithuania).

The name of the company is formed from the surname of its founder, Petro Poroshenko, by dropping the first and last syllables.

The decision to create a new brand was made in 2000. Brand development Roshen was taken over by the Bureau of Marketing Technologies. There were attempts to create corporate legends explaining the origin of the name, which were never successful. For example, it was told about the god of sweets of the same name from some ancient mythologies or a count who was very fond of sweets.

The foreign sound of the Ukrainian brand was explained as a desire to create an international confectionery brand with the aim of further expansion into foreign markets. Active advertising support for the brand Roshen started in 2002.

Roshen is part of the Ukrprominvest group. The key co-owner of the Ukrprominvest Group is the famous Ukrainian businessman and politician, former people's deputy, head of the board of the National Bank of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.

To the Corporation Roshen includes 4 Ukrainian factories (Kiev, two production sites in Vinnitsa, Mariupol, Kremenchug); two production sites of the Lipetsk Confectionery Factory (Russia), the Klaipeda Confectionery Factory (Lithuania), Bonbonetti Choco Kft (Budapest, Hungary), as well as the Bershadmoloko butter and milk plant, which provides the corporation's factories with natural high-quality dairy raw materials.

At all enterprises of the corporation, the same quality standard was established, the requirements for the finished product were unified, but at the same time, in the understanding of the consumer, the products of the four factories were not associated with one manufacturer. Thus, the company was faced with the task of identifying products with a single brand and creating a national Ukrainian brand.

To date Roshen produces more than 200 types of sweets, chocolate, caramel, cookies, waffles, marmalade and cakes. The corporation works with 60 distributors in Ukraine and 120 in the CIS countries. Products Roshen successfully sold in Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Moldova, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, USA, Canada, Germany and Israel.

The Roshen Corporation, owned by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, will close its factory in Lipetsk. The decision was made, among other reasons, for political reasons. After the start of the crisis in Ukraine, the Russian authorities made claims against the work of the enterprise.

“The Roshen Corporation is stopping the production activities of the Lipetsk confectionery factory. This decision was made for economic and political reasons,” says a statement on the Ukrainian company’s website.

A complete shutdown of production at the factory, which produces caramel, toffee, jellies and cookies, is planned for April, when it runs out of purchased raw materials. Production facilities will be mothballed.

The factory in Lipetsk was acquired by the future president of Ukraine in 2001. Poroshenko is the owner of the Roshen corporation. Before his election to the post of head of state, the media called him the “chocolate king.” Even before being elected president, Poroshenko promised to sell the confectionery business, but in the end he did not do this, and in January 2016 he announced the transfer of shares to the management of the Rothschild Trust.

In Russia, claims have repeatedly arisen against Poroshenko’s Lipetsk factory. In 2014, following a claim by the Russian holding company United Confectioners, which alleged illegal use of trademarks, Roshen accounts were seized, but by the end of the year, criminal charges were filed.

In April 2015, the Investigative Committee of Russia opened a new criminal case regarding the factory’s illegal reimbursement of value added tax (VAT) in the amount of 180 million rubles ($3 million), and the Basmanny Court of Moscow seized the factory’s property worth 2 billion rubles ($33.5 million dollars).

The corporation then accused the authorities of trying to deprive it of the opportunity to sell assets in Russia. Now in a statement, Roshen says that the seizure of property “made the sale of the factory impossible.” In addition, the corporation declares “active discrediting of the factory’s activities in the Russian and Ukrainian media,” as well as “pressure from authorities” on trade organizations selling Roshen candies.

Finally, in Russia the “general level of purchasing power of the population” has decreased, and the corporation’s production in Lipetsk has decreased threefold. Roshen believes that one of the reasons for this was introduced in 2013 by the former head of Rospotrebnadzor Gennady Onishchenko.

The general director of the Lipetsk factory, Oleg Kazakov, said that after the closure of production, “700 people from the workforce, who received a decent salary by Russian standards, will end up on the street.” “All of them, according to the law, will receive severance pay,” he clarified.

The Kremlin later rejected the version of a possible political motive in the case of Roshen. “The company could continue to operate, but if shareholders make such a decision, it is their sovereign decision,” Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

In October last year, Vladimir Putin himself commented on the situation with the Lipetsk factory. He was aware that she was accused of “non-refund of VAT.” “The judicial authorities have introduced certain restrictive measures, but the factory operates, works rhythmically, pays wages, makes profits, and there are no restrictions associated with the use of this profit, including transferring it abroad,” Putin said then.

A reader of the Amic.ru portal during an online conference with specialists from the Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology in the Altai Territory asked whether the sale of candies of the Ukrainian brand Roshen is now allowed.

“Quite a long time ago, Onishchenko introduced a ban on the trade in Roshen sweets (this was even before the events in Ukraine), because benzopyrene was found in them. But the sweets continued to be sold en masse in the markets and are sold to this day. Has the ban been lifted now and what are the consequences? analyzes on the dangers of these products (especially after the Ukrainian events). I love these candies, they are very tasty, but I’m afraid to take them,” wrote a NiGHT reader. We publish the specialist’s answer in the “Question and Answer” section:

Is the sale of Ukrainian Roshen sweets allowed in Russia?

There is no information in the state information resource about the revocation of the ban established by the letter of the Federal Service of Rospotrebnadzor dated July 29, 2013 No. 01/8613-13-32, namely about the suspension of the import into the territory of the Russian Federation of confectionery products (HS codes 1704, 1806) produced in factories of the Confectionery Corporation "Roshen" (Ukraine): PJSC "Kiev Confectionery Factory "Roshen", PJSC "Vinnitsa Confectionery Factory", PJSC "Mariupol Confectionery Factory "Roshen", PJSC "Kremenchug Confectionery Factory "Roshen".

Then why do they continue to sell sweets of this brand?

Lyubov Mikhalenko, a specialist at the Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology in the Altai Territory, draws attention to the fact that Roshen brand candies from other manufacturers, including those operating in the Russian Federation, may be on sale.

Thus, the Roshen factory is located in the Russian city of Lipetsk. However, the production process at the factory has completely stopped. In June 2017, production shutdown at the factory was completely completed. At the same time, the factory’s property was arrested by decision of the Moscow Basmanny Court. That is, the owner of the enterprise cannot sell it.

In addition, the Roshen corporation includes Lithuanian, Hungarian, Kazakh and even Chinese divisions.

Why was Roshen sweets banned in Russia?

On July 29, Rospotrebnadzor announced that quality and safety violations had been identified in the products of the Roshen factory supplied to Russia. In particular, a dangerous chemical compound benzopyrene was found in milk chocolate. As a result, a ban was introduced on the import of this company's products into Russia.

However, Roshen stated that the company has always complied with all certification rules, complied with the necessary sanitary standards, and complied with the requirements of state regulatory documentation of Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

Kazakhstan, Belarus, Moldova and a number of other countries also conducted inspections of the company’s products. They did not reveal any violations. However, in Russia the ban continues to apply.

What is benzopyrene and why is it dangerous?

Benzopyrene is an aromatic compound and is considered a substance of the first class of danger. It is dangerous for humans even at low concentrations, has carcinogenic properties, and can cause mutagenic effects. In experimental studies, malignant tumors occurred in animals.

The main sources of benzopyrene consumed by humans are: ambient air, tobacco smoke, heating (burning wood, coal or other biomass), motor vehicles, asphalt, coal tars. The main food sources of benzopyrene are cereals, oils and fats, and smoked foods. WHO recommends a dietary intake of benzopyrene of no more than 0.36 mcg per day.

Is it true that the Roshen company belongs to the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko?

Yes. And, according to Wikipedia, the name of the Roshen corporation is formed by dropping the first and last syllables from the surname of the corporation’s founder, Petro Poroshenko.

However, while participating in the 2014 Ukrainian presidential elections, Poroshenko announced his intention to sell Roshen. In January 2016, he announced that he had signed an agreement to transfer his stake in the Roshen confectionery corporation to the management of the independent trust fund Rothschild Trust, which is why it seems that until the end of his presidential term he will no longer be able to influence the business.
