Everyone knows what roses mean. Did you know that the color of roses is also very important and can either surprise you or, on the contrary, ruin the relationship?
The custom of giving flowers is always gallant and romantic. For those who are shy or unsure of themselves, giving a bouquet is the easiest way to express your feelings.

Ancient myths, biblical stories and legends - in all of them you can find words about the meaning of flowers. At the beginning of the 18th century, King Charles II of Sweden introduced to Europe new language, having visited Persia and learned the eastern "language of flowers". Flower dictionaries were published throughout the 18th century, telling about the secrets of lilies and lilacs, and individual chapters were devoted to the composition of bouquets.

The more popular a flower is, the more meanings it has. The greatest burden falls, of course, on roses.
Some might say that we are long gone from the Victorian days - e-mail allows you to care for your loved one who is far away from the world, with the same simplicity as if he was in the same room. But, on the other hand, it looks like we have lost contact with the earth.

The only flower, the meaning of which is always clear even today, is the rose. Yes, the connection with the whole world has expanded globally, but the choice of flowers that are given has been reduced to almost one flower.

So, if you want to tell another about your feelings, expand your freedom of choice from a large number of meaningful bouquets. After all, flowers are much more than just an email, and they look much prettier on the table.

Roses deserve the title of the oldest among man-grown flowers, they grew 5000 years ago in gardens in the East. The wild rose is much older - the remains of roses are dated to the appearance of 35 million years ago. Roses are now selling in the millions, which suggests that this beautiful flower has truly stood the test of time.

The ancients attribute the beauty of the rose to the fact that it was created by the gods. The Greek goddess Kloris accidentally stumbled upon a dead nymph and turned her into a flower, Aphrodite added beauty, brightness, joy and charm. Dionysus filled it with fragrant nectar, and the west wind Zephyr fanned the clouds so that Apollo could water the rose under sunlight... Then the flower was named "Queen of Flowers" and given to the god of love, Eros.

The Romans have their own ideas about the origin of the rose. According to their legend, there lived a beautiful girl named Rodanta. She had many fans, but she didn't like them. These young people were so full of love and desire that one day it came to the point that they broke down the doors of her house and burst inside. This story greatly angered the goddess Diana, who turned the girl into a flower, and her fans into thorns to teach them a lesson.

Whatever the source of the rose, this flower is undoubtedly the most famous symbol of beauty and love.

Each of us remembers that different colors of roses symbolize certain feelings that we have for the one to whom we give them. However, there are so many interpretations of rose colors that it is very difficult to remember them the first time.

Red rose is a symbol of love and passion. However, if you give it to a subordinate or business partner, then it expresses approval of a successful job or respect.

A dark-burgundy rose is a rose that is customary to give to representatives of the older generation. This is the color of "unconscious" but unfading beauty.

A pink-colored flower is a traditional gift for a young girl. It denotes youth and its inherent modesty.
In addition, it symbolizes trust, tenderness and grace. Giving such a flower to a girl who attracts you means starting a relationship between you, hinting about your feelings.
However, pink can have a different meaning, depending on the saturation of the color. So, dark pink means gratitude and appreciation, and light pink means sympathy and admiration.

You can safely present a white rose to a very young lady. But creamy white is the color of the bridal bouquet. He symbolizes himself happy love.
It is a mistake to think that yellow roses have a negative interpretation. In fact, yellow is the color of friendship and joy. These flowers look great in any floral arrangement.
An orange or coral rose is a great way to express enthusiasm, commitment to a goal.

A tea rose will also tell you about your romantic feelings, a musky rose will express your admiration, a metropolitan rose is another way to confess your love. All light colored roses usually symbolize friendship.

Roses in buds, presented in a bouquet, symbolize beginning, innocent love. The buds of red and pink roses say: "You are young and beautiful", the unblown white roses mean: "You are too young for love."

For the first declaration of love, use light green roses.
If two buds are attached to a blooming rose, then some kind of mystery must be seen in this message.

Two roses tied together invite a date, they also mean the expectation of marriage.
Roses in the form of a wreath are a symbol of chastity. Since ancient times, wreaths of roses at weddings have symbolized purity.
Rose foliage means hope and optimism.

The number of roses in the language of flowers also plays important role... So, a single rose is a symbol of modesty; one red rose is a well-known way to declare love. To invite on a fun date, a red rose is presented in a bouquet, usually by adding two yellow roses.

The combination of white and red flowers in a bouquet means your agreement, unanimity. The combination of reds and yellows is your sincere "Congratulations!" Mysteriousness emanates from a rose in full bloom with two buds.

If the roses have leaves, then this symbol is reliable, if you cut them off, then the bouquet will say that, alas, there is no more hope.
But if you cut off the thorns, then you will assure the person to whom you are giving the bouquet that he has nothing to be afraid of next to you.

"There is no paint, flowers, weed, fruit, grass, stone, bird feather that does not have a verse corresponding to them, and you can quarrel, scold, send letters of passion, friendship, courtesy, or exchange news, without getting dirty your fingers. "
Lady Mary Wortley Montague
A fabulous, mysterious language of flowers. How often they resorted to him, and sending secret messages, and confessing hidden feelings, and even sending urgent dispatches.

This language came to Europe at the beginning of the 18th century, thanks to the notes of two persons: Aubrey de la Mottray and Lady Mary Wortley Montague. The first described his stay at the court of King Charles XII of Sweden in Turkey in a two-volume "Journey ... through Europe, Asia and Africa" in 1727. And the wife of the British ambassador to Istanbul in 1717, Mary Wortley Montague, described the secret language of love correspondence "villages", also called "the language of objects and flowers," in her letters published in 1763, shortly after her death, and made her famous. Flower dictionaries were published throughout the 18th century, telling about the secrets of lilies and lilacs, and individual chapters were devoted to the composition of bouquets. The language was very popular in France and England during the time of Queen Victoria.

But the language of flowers - floriography - was born in the East, and women created it. Deprived of communication, not daring to often open their faces, they communicated, making bouquets and sending them to the addressee.

Associations that once emerged gradually turned into persistent symbols, thanks to which it was possible to conduct a conversation. It was considered important when flowers are presented, how the giver holds the bouquet, with inflorescences up or down, in the left or right hand, whether the bouquet is decorated with leaves and whether the thorns of the rose are removed.

There are customs and prejudices regarding the color of the petals. A special relationship, of course, to the color yellow, the color of betrayal and infidelity. In one of the eastern legends, it is said that red roses exposed the unfaithful wife of a certain sultan, turning yellow right in her hands. But in the culture of Japan, yellow is a symbol of light and sun, and yellow flowers are given to people who wish light and good. Orange symbolizes strength, power, pride. And blue flowers speak of longing, loyalty, and it is customary to give them to those leaving for the army. Solemn purple is a sign of friendship, and green is calm and peace. Neutral white is a symbol of purity, tenderness, sadness and mourning, just like in some other countries. In China, female fidelity was symbolized by garden flowers, and unfaithful wives - by wildflowers, which any passer-by could pluck.

Having become fashionable, the language of the villages acquired new adherents. In 1811, B. Delanchet's textbook "The ABC of Flora, or the Language of Flowers" was published in Paris. In this guide, about two hundred plants were described, and each letter of the French alphabet was associated with the image of a particular flower.

In 1819, Charlotte de Latour's textbook "The Language of Flowers" appeared in France. Perhaps the author's name was just a pseudonym, behind which was either the writer Aimé Martin or the writer Louise Cortambert. All color illustrations of the book were made by the talented French naturalist and artist Pancras Besse.

In 1930, the Russian poet D.P. Oznobishin translated from Persian and published in St. Petersburg the book "Selam or the Language of Flowers". In the book, he described about 400 plants, and each had a conventional meaning.

Oznobishin also introduced the game of forfeits, known today and beginning with the words "I was born a gardener ...".

Oznobishin's book has become a kind of practical guide to using the language of flowers when compiling home albums.

In the fourth chapter of Eugene Onegin, Pushkin mentions the following album:

The culture of the villages began to fade away already by the middle of the 19th century, by the beginning of the 20th century, due to the stormy events, it was completely forgotten. But flower dictionaries have survived to this day.

Advertising agent Patrick O'Keefe's phrase Say it with flowers! - "Say it with flowers!" - first appeared in the American Florist's Exchange magazine in 1917. The Society of American Florists immediately made this advertising slogan their motto. And until now, everyone who is directly connected with the magical world of flowers does not get tired of repeating and advising us: "Say it with flowers!"

But, of course, the witty Patrick O'Keefe did not open America to the world: flowers became a special language of communication long before his advertising triumph.

There is an interesting painting by the English orientalist painter of the 19th century John Frederick Lewis "The Intercepted Message", which depicts a scene in an eastern harem.

An agitated woman in the presence of the "husband-sultan" was caught in receiving ... a bouquet of flowers. Flowers are a message from a lover. Now everyone will find out her secret by carefully considering what flowers the bouquet consists of.

A bouquet in a harem is not just a sign of attention - it is a letter written in the secret language of flowers. Selam is a special language, born in Turkish harems and spread first in Turkey and then throughout the world.

The reasons for the emergence of selam are clear. Living in isolation, without the right to communicate with the outside world and will teach you not such tricks.

Intercepted Message by John Frederick Lewis

They say that the Swedish king Charles XII, after the defeat at Poltava, fled to Turkey and lived there for some time, became very interested in the language of flowers, studied it and after returning to Europe created the first Selam dictionary. What made contemporaries and especially contemporaries very happy.

But even more interesting about Selam was told to the world by the French traveler Aubry de la Mottre. He described his vivid impressions in the book "Travels in Europe, Asia and Africa", which was published in 1727. In it, he interestingly talks about secret language Selam.

The Englishwoman Mary Wortley Montague continued the theme. She was the wife of the British ambassador in Istanbul. Mary studied the peculiarities of the colorful East with interest and attention. She was interested in the language of flowers. She set herself the goal of learning to “speak” and “write” this love Esperanto.

Back in England, she published Letters from the Turkish Embassy. In them, Lady Mary characterized the language of symbols as follows: “There is no paint, flowers, fruit, grass, stone, bird feather that does not have a verse corresponding to them, and you can quarrel, swear, send letters of passion, friendship, courtesy, or exchange news without getting your fingers dirty. "

Flower fever swept through Europe. Never before have so many bouquets been given, never before have flowers in hairstyles, buttonholes, hats and dresses been so fashionable. And all of this was now filled with a special meaning.

Now people were not content with only the impression “beautifully-ugly”, but sought and found the meaning of the “flower message”. It was new and interesting. Certainly, Russian nobility picked up the idea of a loving floral Esperanto. The language of flowers was especially popular at the court of Catherine II.

Starting from the end of the 18th and the whole of the 19th century, “Flower Dictionaries” were published in various European countries with a detailed explanation of the meaning and significance of a particular flower or plant. The ancient flower dictionaries described a huge number of plants and flowers, sometimes more than 300 names. Here are some of them.

Acacia is friendship, pure love.
Astra - grace, sophistication.
Hawthorn - courage and hope.
Gladiolus - the willingness to sacrifice yourself for the sake of your beloved.
Jasmine - sensuality, passion, first love longing.
Lily of the valley - innocence and purity of morals.

Publication from Ekaterina Pavlukhina (@katerinapavlukhina) Aug 25 2017 at 10:33 PDT

For the first time it was possible to read about Selam in Russian in 1830. Poet and translator Dmitry Oznobishin published the book "Selam or the Language of Flowers". In it, the author gave an interpretation of the symbolic meanings of over 400 plants.

The book was beautifully illustrated, witty and provoked Russian society sensation, giving rise to the salon love game "Flirt of flowers".

Young ladies and ladies of the Pushkin era, along with French and English, enjoyed learning a new language. So in the arsenal of Russian coquettes, another killer trick appeared. Here are lines from a letter from Anna Kern to one of her many admirers: "I have Thyme, I dreamed of Reseda, I need to add a lot of Yellow Nasturtium to my Sensual to hide the Marigolds and the Rosehip that torments me ..."

Using the language of flowers, this phrase can be interpreted as follows: "I have a desire, I dream of the fleeting happiness of love, but I must hide my secret sensitivity under mockery in order to hide anxiety and concern." So understand what a woman wants.

Everything comes and goes, and to late XIX century, the culture of knowing the language of flowers began to fade away. The turbulent twentieth century has pushed him into the past. Now it is understandable to a narrow circle of specialists - historians and art historians. But this does not mean that people have stopped loving flowers. Flowers continued and continue to decorate human life as before. And let Patrick O'Keefe's phrase "Say it with flowers!" - just a publicity stunt. Let the language of SMS messages be in vogue today. But if the person with whom you are accustomed to call back and correspond, suddenly gives you a rose when they meet, then ... That is a completely different matter.

The language of flowers

Flowers ennoble our life, caress the eye, bestowing joy on people, softening morals, bring peace and pleasure. And giving flowers means expressing feelings of love, reverence, affection or respect. Undoubtedly, when presenting a bouquet, you want to be sure that you have made the right choice. And if you have made a bouquet, taking into account the meaning of flowers, it will turn into a very valuable gift ...

At the beginning of the 18th century, King Charles II of Sweden introduced a new language to Europe, having visited Persia and learned the eastern "language of flowers". Flower dictionaries were published throughout the 18th century, telling about the secrets of lilies and lilacs, and individual chapters were devoted to the composition of bouquets. The language of flowers was very popular in France and England during the time of Queen Victoria.

The more popular a flower is, the more meanings it has. The greatest burden falls, of course, on roses. This flower is undoubtedly the most famous symbol of beauty and love. Everyone knows that red roses mean "I love you". Less is known about the meaning of colors and types of roses. Red and white in one bouquet means unity, pink means grace and elegance, and yellow means pleasure or joy of communication. Orange or coral roses will tell you what you want. Dark red or burgundy will tell your beloved that she is insanely beautiful. Pink roses mean "beloved - beloved, darling - dear, sweetheart - cute", so they are well suited to tell both man and woman about it. A single rose means modesty, and is good for a gift when you are short on money. If you are old enough and your intentions are serious, do not give a bouquet of roses and rosebuds: the former means that you are in the heaven of love, and the latter means that you are too young for love.

If you want to deviate from tradition a little, or "I love you" is not something that comes to mind when you think of your beloved, perhaps you need something other than a rose. Several flowers play the same role as the rose: red chrysanthemums, tulips or carnations also say "I love you." Daisies will compliment the beauty of your beloved, and elegant lily flowers that this beauty is simply irresistible. But the lilac can be given only once, because it is believed that it belongs to the first love. Gardenia is for the timid and timid, as it expresses hidden love, which is not mentioned. Violets express affection.

To express negative emotions irreplaceable dogs. Daffodils, flowers of selfishness, will help to play a trick on vanity. Present them with petunia, which expresses irritation and resentment. Large flowers of marigolds (marigolds) will tell about your jealousy, while small ones - about your support of your beloved, so that he does not despair.

In our time, it cannot be said that many people use the language of flowers to explain themselves. Most are not even aware of what the presented bouquet can tell. And yet, if you want to be original, get creative with the choice of the bouquet. And together with the flowers, give your beloved a “translator of the“ language of flowers. ”Let him guess at your leisure what you wanted to say to her!

Get to know your character by bouquet

Violets are a symbol of romantic sadness. A violet lover is most often an introvert. He does not necessarily look melancholic or a complete pessimist, but he is probably withdrawn and at heart feels unaccountable anxiety. The violet connoisseur usually hides in the shade, but is always ready to go out into the sun and take what he is entitled to. The choice of violets can be dictated by nostalgic mood, longing for a lost or unattainable ideal. In any case, violets prefer subtle, sublime natures, often sentimental, dreamy and prone to idealizing the past.
~~~~~~~~~
Lilacs and wildflowers are preferred by people who are restrained in manifestations of feelings, who are alien to any pretentiousness and exaltation. However, this external severity can also be the flip side of ailing vanity. In unfavorable circumstances, they can withdraw into themselves, isolate themselves from life, are often disappointed and seek perfection in the wild. In some ways, lilac lovers are similar to lovers of violets: they are refined natures, with a rich inner peace and a deep anxiety that they hardly realize. They often lack energy and drive to achieve their goals. Diligent. A lilac lover is happy to help others.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tulip. This elegant glass on a thin stem is a flower of surprisingly flexible and plastic natures. They do not bend under the pressure of life's difficulties, they have a strong energy potential. "Tulip" is easy to communicate, but no one knows his true plans and designs - for all its seeming simplicity, this is a man of mystery. One thing is clear: in the depths of the soul of each of the tulips, there is hope for better life... And this inextinguishable faith gives them the strength to endure the hardships of life and, for the time being, be content with little. A woman who loves this flower is energetic. Big conceit. It takes a lot of effort to get her recognition. These women tend to have unhappy husbands.
~~~~~~~~~~~
It is no coincidence that lilies have become an element of royal heraldry. Among people, "lily" also feels like a queen. In any case, these flowers are loved by people with a vivid sense of their own dignity, confident in themselves and their own strengths. They are energetic, proud, sometimes even arrogant and arrogant. There is some imperceptible charm in neither. Refinement of nature. Among negative qualities lilies can be noted disregard for the opinions of others - lilies lack self-criticism, but in excess - self-confidence. By the way, such people should be prone to masquerade, deception, flirting.
Roses are close to the heart of active, confident and self-sufficient people. They know how to love themselves and give love, since this flower is the most famous symbol of beauty and love. With all its appearance, a rose expresses harmony and tranquility. Such are the fans of roses - people with a stable psyche and a generally stable life. They stand firmly on their feet, do not chase the unrealizable and exist in real world where comfort and the established order of things are appreciated. Among rose lovers, there are many people who are ambitious and assertive and somewhat aggressive. In any case, the rose will always be able to stand up for itself and will not miss its own. But these are, of course, people with vivid manifestations, outstanding, strong-willed and passionate. The rose causes understandable envy among the rest. Intrigues are woven against Rosa, they want her to survive from her rightful place, to deprive her of the prize. The rose is unapproachable.
Carnation is highly controversial. On the one hand, this is a protocol flower, semi-official. He is often preferred by masters of diplomacy and formal communication, carefully concealing their essence. On the other hand, there is something seductive about the carnation, with its dense, thin stem and flirtatious carved inflorescence. So, among lovers of these flowers, there are often dexterous manipulators who know how to extract the maximum benefits from communication. A person with such a direct character as Carnation's is worth looking for. Others do not like this property at all. But alas, Carnation stands her ground, even if the power is not on her side. Carnation is also dear to the heart of down-to-earth people who do not load themselves with abstract speculations.
In our conditions, we see an orchid torn out of its natural environment: it is often even devoid of a stem and hidden in a plastic box. This exotic attracts natures, of course, complex and original, with oddities and whims. They do not know how to have fun with simple, affordable means and are looking for sophistication in everything. Perhaps this is a consequence of deep dissatisfaction with life.
Gerberas. Kindness, simplicity and openness to the world are really expressed in this sculptural and simple flower with its openly trusting cup. The flip side of this childish openness is insecurity. At the same time, gerberas strive for perfection in everything, and coupled with their inability to adapt, this sometimes translates into obstinacy. Love for the dense molding of a gerbera, for the peace expressed in her figurine, can mean fear of life and the search for solid support.
Irises and gladioli are energy, strength and loneliness. Iris lovers strive with all their might to achieve their goals or subordinate their lives to specific desires. But often they have broken contact with others, and desires come into conflict with reality. Hence the misunderstanding of loved ones, which brings them pain. These proud people lack flexibility, but they do not humble themselves and continue their path of loners. Bulb connoisseurs are hardworking and diligent. In doing so, they can easily achieve the desired results and lead large firms and companies.
The peony is controversial. On the one hand, it is a symbol of vanity. On the other - shyness and bashfulness. Unsatisfied passion or suppressed sexuality is the lot of many pion lovers, while others, on the contrary, are very loving. The latter are distinguished by their insatiability in everything - from the love of wealth and fame to the greed for life in general. Chrysanthemum. Craving for perfection makes her akin to a gerbera. But she is characterized by seriousness, coldish detachment and a passion for self-examination.
The chrysanthemum is too fenced off from life, closes in on itself, so it can be difficult to understand it and it is not easy to love it, as always happens with people who do not know how to love themselves.
Flowers are the best mediators in communication between people. Flowers accompany us constantly throughout life, give joy, personify love and attention. People often used their gentle, trusting, romantic language. As you know, from history, the "language of flowers" originated in Constantinople in the 17th century, and in Europe they learned about it in 1716 thanks to Lady Mary Wortley Montel who visited Turkey. In 1930. Russian poet D.P. Oznobishin translated from Persian and published in St. Petersburg the book Selam or the Language of Flowers. In the book, he described about 400 plants and each had a conventional meaning. Basically, the symbols and meanings of colors reflected generally accepted associations, but often they were far-fetched, fictional.
Oznobishin's book was very popular among young people. Young people, knowing the meaning of flowers and plants, could speak about their feelings in their language. The gentle, sensitive, poetic soul of the Russian people has always understood and deeply resonated with inseparable spiritual values - nature, beauty, art. Flowers, bouquets, floral ornaments were cast in bronze, plaster, glass was carved from wood, marble. They were actively used by architects and interior designers. They “blossomed” magnificently in other types of art as well: still lifes with flowers by I. Khrutsky, bouquets of K. Korovin and Levitan, etc. appeared in painting. a symphonic picture of nature - dawn on the Moscow River by M. Musorsky, etc. In nature and poetry, flowers have served as a rich source of comparisons.
.
Receiving bouquets of flowers is as pleasant as giving them. And to make bouquets? In the past, with the help of flowers, people conveyed whole messages that they could not or did not dare to express in words. In the old days, bouquets were formed in strict accordance with the language of flowers.
P.A. Vyazemsky
"Flowers"
By type, person and year
I have flowers in my garden:
I give innocence to lily,
Poppy to sleepy luscious husbands
Fragrant lily of the valley
To the friends of the humble poor Lisa,
Narcissus is unhappy and pale -
Handsome men, busy with themselves.
Evil messengers and talkers
I meet with a bell;
I close in the shadows
For a sweet rose without thorns.
The language of flowers originated in the East. It was with the help of flowers that oriental beauties told about their mood and feelings. Europe learned about this amazing language only in the 18th century after the letters of the wife of the British ambassador to Istanbul, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, published in 1763. Since the end of the 18th and the entire 19th century, “Flower Dictionaries” were published in various European countries with a detailed explanation of the meaning and meaning of a particular flower or plant. The ancient flower dictionaries described a huge number of plants and flowers, sometimes more than 300 names. Here are some of them:
Symbol colors
Attention was also paid to the color of flowers, the presence of thorns and even the state of the flower itself. So, for example, a rosebud meant a young innocent girl who had not yet known the joy of love, and a withered rose was a symbol of lost youth, joy, happiness and beauty, and sometimes even early death.
  • Pink - love
  • Bright red - passion
  • Green - hope
  • Light blue - faith
  • Silver - immortality
These rules also extended to artificial flowers, which were used to decorate clothes and hats. For example, myrtle and orange / orange blossom (orange) flowers were recommended for the bride's wreath and bouquet, which symbolized the purity and innocence of the bride. It was considered bad form if a young unmarried girl adorned herself with bright red flowers.
Love messages in flowers
There were times when the presence of a lady's lover did not bother anyone, but on the contrary confirmed her popularity. The letter, like the diaries, was considered unreliable, as they could be in the wrong hands and become public. Because many famous people just burned their letters and diaries. If the love correspondence was kept, then the return of letters was considered the rule of good manners in the event of a break in relations.
Flowers or a flower was more reliable and practical in this regard. Then it was easier to keep a flower that made sense for lovers. He was pulled out of the bouquet (if suddenly there was a bouquet, because small bouquets could be kept intact) and dried, and then put into a book, a box, or another secret place.
It was extremely important, and special attention was paid to this in the past: by whom and when the flowers were presented, how the donor holds the bouquet, in which hand and how he gives it to the addressee (inflorescences up or down), what flowers the bouquet consists of; and on the details: the bouquet is fresh or wilting, whether the thorns are removed from the stems.
The language of flowers was not unambiguous and even more strict. The same flower in different countries and estates could be endowed with different meanings. It was also popular among lovers to come up with their own, only they can understand the flower language. And then the secret did not become clear ...
Insult by flowers
In the gallant century and later in the 19th century, the language of flowers was widely used at European courts and salons. But those who think that the language of flowers (and fans) was used as a language for conversation are mistaken. I mean the very language that we use in the everyday act of communication, and not the salon games of those years, where with the help of tablets it was really possible to conduct a conversation, as, for example, the deaf and dumb use sign language, with the help of which they really talk to each other ...
The language of flowers was important and necessary for conveying feelings, mood, degree of love, respect, and so on. Moreover, to know the language of flowers was a social necessity, since “... this gives a full opportunity to be ready to dull the sting of ridicule and in time to reflect the vulgar trick of the wit, who<…>I would take it into my head to bring you a bouquet of flowers, the meaning of which would not at all agree with your age or your dignity, or would contain a clear hint of something offensive to you "(" Secular Life and Etiquette ", 1901)
That is, it would be offensive to give a bouquet to a married lady, in which there would be orange flowers - a symbol of innocence - but precisely because of its meaning, fleur-d-orange was the main flower in a bouquet of brides of those years. By the way, this tradition has remained in aristocratic and royal houses: young brides go with a bouquet of orange flowers.
In the everyday life of ordinary people, some idea of the symbolism of flowers also remained, but less deep, not always appropriate and lost touch with the connotations of our ancestors. Oh, those red roses! So a guy can give a girl red roses and the girl will be happy for them both because it is a bright symbol and because roses are dear now! But she does not consider the symbolic trick of the thorns. In the past, red roses were inappropriate, and white lilies were preferred as a gift to your beloved. Despite the variety, these days bouquets have become monotonous. Who will give a bouquet of violets or forget-me-nots today? And before it was commonplace.
Alexander bouquets
A well-known historical example of the language of flowers as a symbol of reverence is the so-called Alexander bouquets in honor of the Russian Emperor Alexander I. These were large and small bouquets. The big ones were fastened to the bodice or inserted into portbouquets, and the small ones were worn in their hair. Created from flowers, the initial letters of the names of which folded into the name of the emperor Alexander, i.e. Anemon (anemone), Lilie (lily), Eicheln (acorns), Xeranthenum (amaranth), Accazzie (acacia), Nelke (carnation), Dreifaltigkeitsblume (cheerful eyes , i.e. pansies), Epheu (ivy) and Roze (rose).
Such bouquets were very popular both in Russia and in Europe, especially after the victory over Napoleon. European aristocrats without these bouquets could not appear in society: it was the duty to decorate their toilet with symbolic flowers, so they came to the opera, to the ball and other secular meetings, including primarily those that were held in the presence of His Majesty.
Similar bouquets spelled out by names were folded by couples in love, worn by brides. A loving gentleman could send such a bouquet to the lady of his heart before a ball, a theater, and the lady, as a sign of courting, inserted such a bouquet into her portbouquet, or simply ignored it as a sign of refusal and came with another bouquet.
