Kuban is a Cossack region, the cradle of his distant childhood. Through the distances and the mountains, I see its endless wheat steppes, the seas and estuaries sparkling with blue silver, under a light ridge of clouds - mountains greening with forests. He hears her songs and with excitement recalls the names of the steppe and upland rivers and rivulets hiding in themselves the secret of history: Sosyka, Eya, Laba, Belaya ... The faces of grain growers and plowmen of the fertile Kuban land, covered with the hot southern sun, rise before his gaze.

Each poet on the map of the country has his own promised land, his only protected land - main source creative inspiration. The Kuban was and always remains such a land and a source of inspiration for Ivan Barabbas.

"Who will decorate my Kuban with a song, if we do not? ..". The poet's love for this land is special. She is in his roots ...

D. Yavornitsky, in his essays on the history of the Cossacks, recalls that when the Great Zaporozhian Army was being formed, not every fugitive people were admitted to the Sich, but only a Cossack by origin. This is how it was in Russia, when a new family was born, during matchmaking, choosing a groom or a bride, they looked at the roots. By "ancestry" Ivan Fedorovich Varavva is a thick Cossack, as they say, from head to toe. His ancient ancestors were registered Cossacks in the Zaporizhzhya Sich. And according to the diploma granted by Tsarina Catherine, together with Zakhary Chepiga and Anton Golovaty they moved to the Kuban as part of the Black Sea Cossack Host. The eldest of the family - the noble Colonel Barabbas - commanded a rowing flotilla that sailed across the Kuban. The second of the honored relatives of Ivan Barabbas is the enlightener. Barabbas - for exemplary service was awarded the Tsar's gold personal watch together with Ataman Babich.

The plan of the Cossack family of Barabbas cannot be called lighthearted. It is fateful for Russia.

Ivan Varavva's grandfather, Nikita Savelyevich, formerly a Cossack of the Second Zaporozhye Regiment of the Kuban Cossack troops, in the civil war, in the battles on the Manych River, he was wounded and left for treatment in a hut with distant relatives in the Don settlement Novobataiskaya. Having recovered, he did not return home to the Kuban, but moved his entire family to the Don. Here, in the then settlement of Novobataiskaya, Ivan Varavva was born on February 5, 1925.

While working, his grandfather acquired a working farm, for which he was dispossessed during the period of collectivization. The farm was confiscated, and my grandfather was exiled to Solovki.

In the years of famine, relatives and the entire large family of Ivan Barabbas scattered across the Don and the North Caucasus in search of bread, work and a quiet life. Having left the deserted courtyard and the dispossessed house, the father and mother, taking their young sons in their arms, on foot, and then on a creaky cart encountered on the road, set off to their origins - to the Kuban!

As a seventeen-year-old boy, in 1942, after graduating high school in the village of Starominskaya, under the roar of gunfire, Ivan Varavva volunteered for the front, enrolling in the village's fighter battalion. In his incomplete 18 years, he becomes a soldier.

The young warrior received his first baptism of fire on the outskirts of Novorossiysk, near the village of Krymskaya. Soon, while taking the height, he was wounded, and after treatment he returned to the front again.

By his freedom-loving character, inherited from the Cossack family, he most of all feared fascist captivity ... Twice he left the iron encirclement unharmed, when only a few remained alive. He burned, was covered with earth from an exploded bomb ... Front-line comrades, when they meet, recall how during the attack of the hill, now called the Sopka of Heroes, behind him, in a duffel bag beaten with shrapnel, filled with excess ammunition, a fuse began to smoke. And the explosion rumbled, but after someone pulled the bag off his shoulders ...

Eyewitnesses testify that during the breakthrough of the enemy Blue Line in the Kuban in 1943 in the area of ​​heights near the village of Krymskaya, the front commander, General Petrov, who watched reconnaissance in force through binoculars, personally presented all those who distinguished themselves to high government awards ...

Among these brave fighters was a very young Red Army soldier from the Cossack village of Starominskaya, Ivan Varavva.

For a fascist in battle, the Cossack lava was like hell!

... The day is burning up, ringing like dragonflies.

I am the lord of metal and fire.

For the enemy, this state of a soldier was transcendent, incomprehensible, that he could not overcome with his mind ...

Fights, campaigns and transitions, wounds and concussions, awards and losses, a long military journey to Berlin. Order of the Red Star and Medal For Courage. Medals for the liberation of cities and the storming of the German stronghold. The Order of the Red Star caught up with the soldier 25 years later, after the victory he still gets it. "A mortarman and gunner of a company of machine gunners in the past, and now a famous Soviet poet" - the magazine "Soviet Warrior" testified in 1970, - "receives the Order of the Red Star from the hands of the military commissar, twenty-five years after the victory."

A dashing Cossack Ivan Baravva passes a difficult military path. How did he survive? Probably the thought of his native land, love for it helped him to survive.

The creative destiny of Ivan Barabbas is in demand by Russia and the people.

Since 1943, poems by Ivan Barabbas began to appear regularly in the army press. Their content was very varied. But they were all imbued with the same mood - the will to win:

A soldier was walking to Berlin

Long field road,

Gun thunder

They were exhausted above him.

Automatic sleeves bloomed

In the middle of the Danube valley

The soldier staggered

The soldier dropped his heart ...

The young poet reflected in his early work everything that happened around him, assessed the events. And there was a fierce war. Soviet soldiers liberated their wounded native land, saw the suffering of people who endured fascist captivity, saw how these people immediately took up the restoration of everything that the war had destroyed. Barabbas wrote his first poems in the trenches for a divisional newspaper. Due to lack of paper, I had to write with back side paper targets given to him by a thrifty foreman.

Even then, famous masters of poetry drew attention to the work of the aspiring poet: A. Tvardovsky, Vl. Sosyura, M. Rylsky. They were his first teachers and mentors, a lot of time has passed since then, but even now Ivan Fedorovich remembers how the prominent poets treated him in a fatherly way, supported him with a spark of poetic spark.

He was smart, full of smile, humor, comradely responsiveness. Barabbas fit easily into the student body. Although it was not easy for a guy from the Kuban village to determine his place in the capital, among the top five creatively most prominent students of his classmates, which included the now famous poets Konstantin Vanshenkin, Alexander Nikolaev, Bulgarian Dimitar Metodiev, prose writer Maya Ganina.

The "venerable" people came to young writers, sharing their secrets and creative experience with them. The guests were Leonid Leonov, Mikhail Prishvin, Alexander Tvardovsky, Konstantin Simonov, Konstantin Paustovsky. The literary institute was visited by the genius creator of The Quiet Don, the Don Cossack Mikhail Sholokhov. Students showered the writer with questions and books for autographs.

Already in his student years, Ivan Varavva published poetry in the magazines "Soviet Warrior" and "Smena", and also provided him with pages from the magazine "New World", edited by Alexander Tvardovsky. Kuban ”He was offered a job in Moscow, but he decided to return home, you are your native village.

The life choice was made right. Many critics who studied the work of Barabbas would write later that he was one of the best and most famous poets of the Kuban.

The Krasnodar Book Publishing House at different times published collections of poems "On Old Cordons", "Stars in Poplars", "Girl and the Sun", "Cherry May", etc.

Being the author of many poetry collections, Barabbas has established himself as a tireless collector and promoter of oral folk art, Cossack folk songs. The poet considers the Kuban Cossack song, which he fell in love with since childhood, as his very first teacher in poetry. Ivan Baravva recorded folk songs from the brave sang of hundreds of Cossacks and regiments of the old military service, now dead. The oral military were Kuban Cossacks, thoughts, tales, legends were included in the creative baggage of the poet. When the author is asked which of his works he considers the most meaningful, the poet calls the book "Songs of the Kuban Cossacks." The book includes folk songs collected by I. Varavva in the villages and farms of the Krasnodar Territory - works of oral folk art of the Kuban people.

The Kuban Cossack song, and especially the song of the Black Sea Cossacks, is distinguished by its inner capacity. It is sung in four voices with echoes.

Cossacks love freedom and space in everything. Their songs are their lives. The poet Barabbas understands this well, promoting the Cossack creativity:

In the songs, the Kuban Cossack is selflessly in love with the nature of his native land. He, as if to deities, turns to the wind, the eagle,

to the falcon to the native steppe and the wide river Kuban. In the song, the Cossack sincerely talks with his friend - a horse, with his mother, wife or bride, his native land.

From such concepts familiar from childhood and adolescence, an integral and immensely great feeling of the Motherland is formed, love for the Motherland is born, sounding in the verses of Barabbas and the songs of the Cossacks. The poet introduces the Kuban language dialect into the verse. His poetry is light, courageous, life-affirming. Ivan Barabbas in his poems speaks not only about the history of his people, but also refers to the present, to the working days of today. Creating his artistic interpretation, the poet introduces the Kuban language dialect into the verse, which is why folk poetry retains the freshness of its original originality.

Resurrecting the history of heroic and human accomplishments, Ivan Varavva in one of his best works - "The Cossack Tale of the Motherland" - paints an expressive moral and psychological portrait of a Cossack worker and warrior, courageously walking along the paths - the roads of history to the difficult peaks of the future. In the creative continuity of generations, in fidelity to the precepts of the fathers, the poet sees the main strength of the people of the Cossack region. The combination of Cossack dialect words and modern concepts, intonation and melodic characteristics and rich sound writing helped him to reveal the inner state of the heroes and their characters, to create a special poetic flavor that merges at the end of the work with the song soul of the people.

The remarkable singer of the Cossack region is distinctive not only in his external, so to speak, purely Kuban appearance, but also in his internal, spiritual originality, rooted in the depths of the Kuban interior.

Ivan Varavva is an adherent of the main theme in his life - the Kuban. In his work, the poet never looks for easy paths and roads, accepting life's difficulties as they are.

Throughout the creative path, the image of the Kuban in the poet's soul not only lived, but also strengthened, acquiring a poetic space. With him - "for a holiday the rich, the merry invite the people of the village to gobble". He has - "Cossack", "Kuban true story", "Chervonny hike", which conquered L. Martynov with the freedom of historical breath. He wrote “The Kubanushka River Runs”, a poetically free arrangement of folk songs of the Black Sea Cossacks, which V. Soloukhin ranked as a heroic epic. He has "Song of Love", a book of lyrics, the leading motif of which, according to V Firsov's conclusion, was nothing more than the living voice of the Kuban Cossack world.

Firmly rooted in his ancestral roots to the Kuban, Ivan Varavva prefers the unique flavor of the majestic Kuban River, the blue-eyed Urup, the frothy-talkative Sosyka and Laba, the sweeping golden expanses of the Cossack region, close to him. The historical past, merging with the present, forms in the books of Barabbas the integral appearance of his native land. The lyrical hero, like the whole person in the poet's poems, is Big world, carrying in itself all the vicissitudes of the people's fate.

The poetic skill of I. Barabbas is unseen, natural. Tvardovsky's word has always been the most attractive for the poet. And from A. Despite the fact that the poet drew the origins of his work in the poetic world of the great classics, I. Barabbas is completely free and natural in choosing a theme and intonation. Many of his poems are colored with funny and sly humor. But in some he suffers and cries, sings and admires. The world of his poetry is diverse.

The poet Barabbas is on the path that he has chosen correctly, in accordance with his character and creative aspirations. The poet never bends his soul. He never knew how to renounce. The Cossack land has forever remained an enduring value for the poet. Speaking about the Kuban - the Cossack land, the poet means that natural, strong, from the height of which he meets and embraces the present day of the Fatherland. This is especially clearly reflected in the book "Cossack Kobzar".

For his many years of poetry and civil feat for the glory of the Motherland, IF Varavva was awarded the high title of laureate of the A. Tvardovsky Literary Prize "Vasily Terkin", honorary academician of the Kuban Academy of Culture, honorary chieftain Pashkovsky kuren.

Our mother Kuban is generous with talents. The native Kuban land brings us its extraordinary gifts. The verses and songs conceal the truly national roots of the culture of the people, its originality. Generations change, but the soul's need pours out in this creativity, as in the old days, when the song was always there: at home, at work in the field, on a military campaign, because it came from the deepest subconscious, from the deepest roots. There are many different poets in the Kuban, but their love for their small homeland unites and unites them.

Relevance- work on this topic allowed me to realize myself as a part of my small homeland, pride in my fellow countrymen - the Kuban people and love for my Motherland.

The first poems of Ivan Barabbas were published in 1944 in the army press. In 1948 he met Alexander Tvardovsky, having read his poem “Near Breslau, beyond the Oder River” in response to “I was killed near Rzhev”. The poems of the young poet were also highly appreciated by the famous Ukrainian poet Volodymyr Sosyura. On their recommendation in 1950 from the correspondence department of the Kiev State University. Taras Shevchenko was transferred to the Literary Institute. Studied with Konstantin Vanshenkin, Evgeny Vinokurov, Sergei Orlov, Boris Balter. In 1951, Tvardovsky published a selection of his poems in Novy Mir. Graduated from the institute in 1953. In 1954, the first collection of his poems, "The Wind from the Kuban", was published. In the same year he was admitted to the Writers' Union of the USSR(see Appendix III Fig. 2).

Barabbas left as a legacy to the young generation of Kuban people not only his books, but also knowledge, experience, devoted love for his native land. Whoever at least once opened the door to the world of creativity of Ivan Barabbas - a poet, soldier, citizen, will remain an enthusiastic admirer of his talent for life. Ivan Fedorovich Baravva died on April 13, 2005 at the age of 80.

2. Homeland in the poetry of I. Barabbas

A) "Homon of the Wild Field"

The name of the poet, folklorist, playwright Varavva I.F. has firmly entered the Cossack spiritual culture and literature of the south of Russia, the completion of the formation of his work as a derivative of an outstanding and extraordinary personality falls on the second half of the twentieth century. I would especially like to dwell on the nineties of the twentieth century. In the economic and cultural collapse that gripped the country, in the political and state powers that hold the strife, when it already seems that the modern literary field has been completely burned out by the drought of a sudden surging lack of spirituality "knocked out by the frost of the state and economic status", it is not shameful to recall Belinsky's statement about "joy" birth of talent. Such a birth was the work of I.F. Barabbas. "The Homon of the Wild Field" is the name of the second book of his poems and poems, included in the collection of works conceived by the author.

The poem of the line-revelation attracts attention:

The idea of ​​the title of the book "The Gomon of the Wild Field" in translation from the "Starokuban" "gomin" is a quiet murmur, a gentle calm complaint, a restrained confidential conversation. An external effect is not needed here. As a symbol, a wild field communicates with a person, and this is no less important: the inextricable connection of a person - a creator with his native land. In the old days, the Wild Field was the name for the steppe territory stretching between the Russian possessions and the outskirts of the Crimean Khanate. Its boundaries have not remained unchanged. This is a lush virgin steppe, stretching from the Volga and the Dnieper to the Don and the Don. And then it is the Kuban plain in green grass, thickets of ossins, and in dense reed marshes extending to the sea shores, to the foothills of the Caucasus.

In the poetic works of Ivan Varavva, the Cossack Wild Field is a free space, a native freedom-loving land, covered with the feat of arms of the ancestors, decorated with hard peasant labor.

If you ask the Kuban Cossack: "What is dearer and dearer to him in the whole world?" - he will answer you: "Homeland and freedom!" And he will express these words with the whole flesh of his earthly being, with the breath of his genetic tree, with the entire heroic and tragic history of the Cossacks: "Motherland and freedom!"

The key moment in the literary works of Barabbas, captured on the pages of the book, can be considered the poetic section "Black Sea Steppe", where he collected, ordered and supplemented with new poems about the Kuban land, plowman, sower, reaper. Here everything is in one: man and native land, field and sky, sun and bread. The voice from the old days of the Wild Field instills in the soul of a man of labor a feeling of joy, hope and expectation of great accomplishments.

B) "Wind from the Kuban"

In 1954, a collection of poems "Wind from the Kuban" was published in Moscow. He speaks of his own blood in the collection. Every word, winged, as if to hurry to reach the sky! Knows about something important - about Cossack Russia - past and present. Furiously, excitedly. With love reckless, selfless, as soon as the Cossack is given to love his land:

The horse does not know

That the world is split by enmity

On white and red standards.

The horse's grass was always green,

Above that grass is the blue sky.

The water in the river is like the sky, endless.

And the night is black, crow's wings,

And Cossack blood is as red as poppies!

In the "green wing of summer", the homeland for the poet, "awakened by spring", "a field awakening." On it - on this reserved field - the history of the Fatherland swept by the "fiery wind".

The tragic share of the ancestors - the Cossacks with a serrated blade entered the soul. Characteristic feature the poetry of Barabbas in this collection is its high civic consciousness. Wind, wind -

Unkind sky, -

The feather-grass distance raged.

In the clouds the sun sways blindly

And the fields are covered with sorrow.

In the poem "Iron Rus", attention is drawn to the line "Wind, wind, unkind sky ..."

According to the Russian, Cossack custom, having a Motherland means loving it.

The day is burning up, ringing like dragonflies.

I am the lord of metal and fire

Fire ... Into me!

Being a truly Russian poet, I. Barabbas perceives Russia as a gift for great creativity. Initially, the poet was given a sense of his standing before the Motherland and Heaven, which created it; a sense of calling to comprehend the extraordinary depth of this creative act; a sense of responsibility for the fate of their ancestral fields. “Some are irresponsibly looking for benefits and pleasure, others feel that they are awaiting something higher and sacred” ... For some, their home is dear: burial mounds, temples are just civic attributes that make up the atmosphere of life and everyday life. And for the poet of Russia, they are the meaning of life, its innermost existential blessing. Understanding creativity not quantitatively, but qualitatively, like a spiritual fence, the poet is never afraid to repeat himself.

It would seem that everything is the same field. But it was no longer the serene dawn, but the Field of Trouble, the Field of Armor that Kulikovo. It absorbed both the cruelty of the battle (“The night trampled the wormwood, stooping over the cruelty of the battle”), and the misfortune of the Cossack split, and the tragedy of the end of bygone Russia. The poetic's anticipation of the Higher Principle crowns the earthly images of his poetry with Heaven. The dynamics of transformation, reincarnation is so internally organic that it is barely perceptible:

A rich land, a Cossack land -

Both fields and valleys ...

A burlak walks in the line ...

Cossack Rus is a value for a poet. Once having pushed off from the "small" Motherland, the poet's soul must overcome it and master the universe. The poetic song of I. Barabbas came from the Kuban. But " small homeland"Did not shorten, did not truncate the poet, did not lock his winged treasure, as if in a hidden, soul, did not make him" shtetl ". And the Kuban itself - small in scope - has never been small for Russia. Speaking about the Kuban - the Cossack land, the poet means that natural, strong. From the height of which he embraces the present day of the Fatherland. From his hereditary, civic positions, the Cossack poet talks about the fate of all of Russia. He relates the two principles - Kuban and Russia - not as a particular to a general, but as a beginning and an end, or rather a continuation of the same process.

Firmly rooted in his ancestral roots to the Kuban, the poet prefers the unique flavor of the majestic Kuban River, the blue-eyed Urup, the frothy-talkative Sosyki and Loba, the sweeping golden expanse of the Cossack region, close to him. Samples of the Kuban and Russia, the homeland in their present and historical past, pass through virtually all works, telling them that other than the feeling of a son - all love cannot be called: “The yellowing fields rustle, rustle, the heart is cheerful with beauty. My dear land, the land of happy love, the land of fathers - my land. " A sense of the uninterrupted connection of generations and a deep attachment to the blood sources of life - this is the moral support, which therefore allows consistently and persistently strengthening the "age-old thread" that linked fathers and children, helping contemporaries to master the most important science - humanity.

The historical past, merging with the present, forms the integral image of the native land. The poet is looking for support in the past of the fatherland in order to more fully establish for himself a number of important regularities in his fate. The poet in his last works does not have verses - descriptions, he does not rush in pursuit of catchy and bright, but seeks to comprehend the essence of the phenomenon, the origins of the "fusion of the very soul" of his fellow countrymen. Even the simplest observations of the poet contain moral meaning and stimulate thought. Early in the morning in the field, his eye notices a steering wheel at a hushed combine, which, looking into a small "mirror circle", diligently shaves before "the cherished departure." The poet does not resort to a detailed description of the hero, but we feel both the "difficult simplicity" of the life he lived, and the restrained strength of the soul. The unpretentiousness of the poetic form, the ability to designate the character of the lyric hero with a barely outlined metaphor, the psychological subtext of reflections on life, homeland, people are the main features of the poetic talent of I. Barabbas. He not only hears folk speech, but also makes it possible for the reader to feel its eloquence, multicolor, various sound and color shades. He has a special ability to feel an original word that cannot stand any exaggeration, but recognizes only the language of life: soft and juicy, figurative and melodious. In the "cherished" he put it this way:

I loved life, I did not know how to fake.

I got along with my difficult sail to the country,

Loved, dreamed, sang a steppe song

Today the famous Kuban poet, front-line soldier Ivan Fedorovich Varavva celebrates his 80th anniversary.

A participant in the defense of the Blue Line near Krymsk, eighteen-year-old Ivan Varavva was presented to the Order of the Red Star by the front commander, General Petrov. After the war, the great poet Alexander Tvardovsky blessed him in big literature.

An excellent connoisseur of Kuban folklore, Ivan Fedorovich is the author of about thirty poetry books, including "The Wind from the Kuban", "Cossack Land", "The Kubanushka River is Running" and, of course, "Cossack Kobzar", which includes more than four hundred lyric works and folk poetry comedy "Nice house, but a hassle in it."

Poems of Ivan Barabbas have been published in our newspaper for half a century. At one time he even worked in the "Soviet Kuban" - the predecessor of the "Free Kuban".

We congratulate Ivan Fedorovich on a wonderful anniversary, we wish him good health and new works about his native Kuban.

Varavva Ivan Fedorovich - Kuban poet, laureate of literary prizes, honorary citizen of Krasnodar.

Ivan Fedorovich Varavva was born on February 5, 1925 in the Novobataiskiy farm in the Samara district of the Rostov region into a family of immigrants from the Kuban. From 1932 he lived in the Krasnodar Territory. His ancestors were registered Cossacks in the Zaporizhzhya Sich, brave pioneers of the Black Sea region. From school as a seventeen-year-old boy, he goes to the front to defend his native land from the Nazi invaders. He was wounded and seriously shell-shocked, but he reached Berlin as a winner. In 1942, his first poems appeared in the army press. Famous masters - Alexander Tvardovsky and Vladimir Sosyura, who became his first teachers and mentors, drew attention to the work of the aspiring poet. At the Moscow Literary Institute. Gorky, the young poet also made friends with the scientist-folklorist V.M. Sidelnikov, who captivated him for the rest of his life collecting folk songs.

The Kuban was and remains the only native land in my life and in my poetry. I take everything bright, joyful and big and that tragic, difficult and harsh that was in my life for granted and give it to the altar of poetry. Native Kuban with its natural beauty, strength and ancient history is little praised in literary works. With my song I was lucky to be next to the first Cossack "bandura players" of the Kuban. For which I am grateful to fate.

Ivan Varavva

In 1950 I.F. Baravva graduated from the literary institute and returned to the Kuban, to the old Cossack village of Starominskaya. A year later, his first book of lyrics "Wind from the Kuban" was published. One by one the collections “On Old Cordons”, “Kuban Summer”, “Stars in Poplars”, “Girl and the Sun”, “Golden Bandura” and many others are published. Already in the first books, the influence on the work of I.F. Barabbas is a folk song in the Kuban based on the Russian and Ukrainian languages. Becoming a journalist for a regional newspaper, he significantly expands his poetic geography, getting acquainted with the life of his fellow countrymen in the most remote corners of the Cossack land. Studying at the Higher scriptwriting courses in Moscow brings him closer to the outstanding Ukrainian director and screenwriter A.P. Dovzhenko. New books: "The Fire of the Adonis", "Song of the Guide", "Cossack Shlyakh", "Falcon Steppe" - consolidate his fame as an unsurpassed singer of native feather-grass open spaces, a broad Cossack soul.

The folklore collection Songs of the Kuban Cossacks, published by the Krasnodar Book Publishing House in 1966, became a landmark in the work of Ivan Fedorovich. For the fact that the poet dared to include in it the Ukrainian national anthem "Ukraine has not died yet ...", which was popular in the Kuban as a popular folk song, the authorities subjected him to harsh criticism. But the poet continues to work on popularizing the folk word, having published after a while an extensive collection of translations and poetic arrangements into Russian of the Black Sea (Ukrainian) folk songs "Cossack Bandura". The poet increasingly creates his new works in the Black Sea dialect Ukrainian language, especially when he refers to the Cossack antiquity. The largest of them is the comedy "A good house - but a hassle in it", staged by the Krasnodar State Academic Drama Theater named after M. Gorky for the 70th anniversary of IF Varavva. This comedy, like the lyrics written in the Old Kuban dialect, is included in the collection of his best selected works "The Cossack Kobzar" (1997).

Music to lyrics by I.F. Barabbas wrote dozens of famous and amateur composers, including Aleksandrov, Ponomarenko, Plotnichenko, Zakharchenko, Ponomarev, Volchenko. Songs to his words sounded in two feature films, performed hundreds of times by professional and amateur ensembles.

Ivan Fedorovich Varavva is a laureate of the A. Tvardovsky literary prize (1996), several literary prizes of the Kuban. Honorary Citizen of Krasnodar (1995), Honorary Citizen of the Bulgarian city of Nessebar (1975), Honorary Collective Farmer of the collective farm "Sopka Heroes" of the Crimean Region (1979), People's Poet of the Republic of Adygea (2000).

He was awarded the Orders of the Patriotic War II and I degrees (1944, 1984), the Red Star (1970), the Badge of Honor (1987), medals For Courage (1943), For the Defense of the Caucasus (1944), For the Liberation of Warsaw "(1945)," 535 years of the Battle of Grunwald "(1945)," For the capture of Berlin "(1945), fifteen jubilee medals, the medal" Hero of Labor of the Kuban "(2005). In the past he was a Deputy of the Regional Council of Workers' Deputies of several convocations.

Each creative person has his own "reserved" land - the land where he draws strength and inspiration. For the poet, playwright and folklorist Ivan Varavva, the Kuban became such a land. His lyrical, soulful poems are imbued with inexhaustible love for his native land.

Ivan Fedorovich is a descendant of an old Cossack family. After Civil war his parents moved from the Kuban to the Don, where the future poet was born on February 5, 1925 in the Rakov settlement (now the city of Novobataisk, Rostov region). His grandfather, who refused to join the collective farm, was dispossessed and exiled to the north. The father had to go to work in the city, and the mother, taking two young children, returned to the Kuban village. Barabbas spent his childhood and youth in Starominskaya, on the banks of the quiet river Soshka. It was there that he wrote his first poems.

Like many of his peers, Ivan was a romantic and dreamer. When the Great Patriotic War broke out, he began to rush to the front. But the seventeen-year-old volunteer was not immediately enlisted in the army, but only a year after the start of the war - when the front line had already come close to the Kuban.

Young Barabbas went a long way: from the first village recaptured from the Nazis to the capture of Berlin. Fights, campaigns, wounds, shell shock, death of friends ... Many trials fell to the lot of the young soldier. During the breakthrough of the famous Blue Line, he was seriously wounded. After recovering, he liberated Ukraine, Belarus, Poland. He was awarded three military orders and many medals. After the Victory, Ivan served in the army for four more years: the long-awaited peace had to be protected. And all this time he continued to write poetry - original, bright, well-aimed.

In 1948, an event occurred in the life of Barabbas that determined his further career. In Kiev, at the republican congress of writers, he met the author of the famous poem "Vasily Tyorkin" Alexander Tvardovsky. After listening to the poems of the young poet, Alexander Trifonovich advised him to continue studying. Subsequently, Ivan entered the Kiev State University named after T. Shevchenko, and two years later transferred to the Moscow Literary Institute named after M. Gorky. In 1951, thanks to Tvardovsky, a selection of Barabbas' poems was published in the Moscow magazine "New World".

After successfully completing his studies, Ivan Fedorovich returned to the village of Starominskaya. Soon he was invited to work in the department of literature and art of the regional newspaper "Soviet Kuban". At the same time, he received from Alexander Trifonovich his new poem "Beyond the Far - Far" with a dedication: "To dear IF Barabbas, with sincere sympathy for his work in poetry. Send something new to the "New World". Hey! A. Tvardovsky ". Such a teacher’s confidence in the student’s abilities required a lot.

Barabbas lived up to the expectations of his mentor: already his first poetry collection "Wind from the Kuban", released in 1954, attracted the attention of readers. A few months after the publication of the book, Ivan Fedorovich was admitted to the Union of Writers of the USSR. Central newspapers and magazines willingly published the poems of the talented Kuban resident.

In the late 1950s, Barabbas was an assistant specialist of the Main Directorate for Film Production of the USSR Ministry of Culture. Then he worked as the executive secretary of the Krasnodar regional writers' organization, was a member of the editorial board of the almanac "Kuban" and the public council of the literary and historical magazine "Rodnaya Kuban". With his participation, the Kuban Cossack Choir was revived.

All his life Ivan Fedorovich recorded songs of the Cossacks, their vivid stories, memories, funny stories. That was the breeding ground for his poetry. She gave images, details, collisions of life, and then all this became literature. From childhood, the folklore that entered the poet's soul was creatively rethought and reworked by the author, but the local flavor, wisdom, simplicity and melodiousness of the folk language were preserved in his poems:

A distance without an edge, steppe breadth!

They rustle without stopping,

Clouds moving in the sky.

Steppe hot wind

He threw the eagle into the zenith.

Barabbas is the author of the books Golden Bandura, Fire of the Adonis, Youth of the Saber, Wheat Surf, Song of the Guide, Flowers and Stars, Falcon Steppe, Cossack Way and many other collections of poetry. He introduced into Russian poetry special motives inspired by the Kuban folklore. Dozens of famous and amateur composers have written music based on his poems. The creativity of the original poet was duly appreciated by the regional and Russian literary awards.

Ivan Fedorovich passed away on April 13, 2005. The people of Kuban cherish the creative heritage of their fellow countryman, who is considered a true folk poet.
